[01] The client

A full-service agency that needed to rank for what it sells.

The client is a full-service digital marketing agency based in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 2015 and operating under the tagline "Blending Expertise with Technology for Digital Domination," the agency serves dental practices, law firms, automotive businesses, franchises, and small businesses across the United States. Their services span SEO management, PPC, web design, Google Business Profile optimisation, AEO, social media, reputation management, and AI-driven marketing.

The irony was clear from day one: a digital marketing agency that helps other businesses rank in Google was itself buried on page four to five for its own industry keywords. Ranking at an average position of 46.6 meant that for the vast majority of queries — including "SEO company in Dallas" and "digital marketing agency" — the site was effectively invisible to anyone who didn't already know the brand name.

The engagement began in August 2025 with a full scope: technical SEO, AEO content structuring, a blog content library, and a backlink acquisition campaign — all aimed at one goal: getting this agency to rank for the services it sells.

Starting challenges
1
Average position of 46.6Ranking on page 4–5 for most queries. Despite massive impression volume (2.4M in August alone), the site was too deep in results to earn meaningful clicks.
2
CTR of just 0.02%High impressions but almost no clicks — a clear signal that rankings were too low for users to ever reach the site from search results.
3
No informational content strategyThe site had service pages but almost no blog content targeting the questions its audience was actively searching. Zero content-driven traffic.
4
Weak backlink profileIn a competitive agency space, domain authority matters. The site lacked the external link signals needed to push rankings into the top 10 for competitive terms.

[02] The strategy

Four pillars. One year-long push.

A competitive agency niche requires a multi-signal approach. Rankings in the digital marketing space don't move from position 46 to 16 with content alone — it takes technical work, authority signals, and AEO structure all pulling in the same direction.

Pillar 01 · Content strategy
Blog content built around real search demand

The site had zero content-driven traffic. We built a library of informational articles targeting queries the agency's audience was actively searching — GBP optimisation, dental SEO, legal bio writing, website colours, and social media strategy.

  • Answer-first structure for AI extraction and featured snippets
  • FAQ blocks with schema markup on every article
  • Targeting a mix of high-volume and high-intent queries
  • Content supporting all verticals the agency serves
Pillar 02 · Technical SEO
Foundation work to enable ranking

Before content can rank, the technical foundation must be clean. We audited and fixed crawl issues, optimised page speed, improved internal linking architecture, and ensured all on-page signals aligned with target queries.

  • Full technical audit — crawl errors, redirect chains, indexing
  • Title and meta description rewrites across service pages
  • Internal linking structure connecting blog to service pages
  • Schema markup — Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, Organisation
Pillar 03 · AEO optimisation
Structured for AI engines, not just Google

As an agency selling AEO services, ranking in AI-generated answers is both a commercial need and a credibility signal. We structured every content piece for extraction by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

  • Direct answer blocks at the top of every article
  • Entity associations mapped to industry-specific terminology
  • Organisation and service schema across all main pages
  • Review snippets and product snippets generating rich results
Pillar 04 · Backlink acquisition
Domain authority for a competitive niche

Digital marketing is one of the most competitive niches in SEO. Without authoritative external links pointing to the site, content alone cannot outrank agencies that have been building links for years. Backlink work ran throughout the engagement.

  • Targeted outreach to industry directories and publications
  • Guest posting on marketing and business websites
  • Citation building for local Dallas-area authority
  • Resource link acquisition from existing content

[07] What drove the results

Five lessons from 12 months of data.

01
Technical fixes unlock ranking potential fast

Position improved from 46.6 to 32.8 in the very first month after technical work — before a single article was published. Clean crawl paths, proper redirects, and on-page signal alignment give Google permission to rank the content it already has. Technical SEO is not preparation for real work. It is the real work.

02
Agencies must practice what they sell

A digital marketing agency ranking on page 4 for "SEO company in Dallas" loses commercial credibility. Prospective clients search for agencies before contacting them. Improving that ranking to 39.4 average position — still climbing — makes the site's search presence evidence of its capability. The case study sells the service.

03
Content compounds over 12 months

Articles published in October 2025 were still climbing in June 2026. Content does not peak the week it's published — it takes months for Google to fully evaluate it against competing pages. The month-by-month data shows exactly how this compounding works: early content carries later months and later content extends the platform the early content built.

04
High impressions at low position is not failure

The site had 2.4 million impressions in August 2025 with 384 clicks — a 0.02% CTR. That is not a sign of weak content. It is a sign of rankings too deep to earn clicks. The work was not to get more impressions but to move those impressions into positions where clicks happen. Position improvement is the lever. Everything else follows from it.

05
Rich results multiply the value of rankings

Schema implementation generated 2,414 clicks through review snippets and 765 clicks through product snippets — results that would not have existed without structured data. Rich results improve CTR at any given position. The schema work paid for itself within months by making the same rankings earn more clicks than they would have without it.

12mo
A year of consistent work beats short bursts

The results did not come from one viral post or one lucky backlink. They came from 12 months of consistent content production, technical maintenance, backlink acquisition, and AEO structuring — all pulling in the same direction. SEO compounds when it is treated as a system, not a campaign.
